Build Quality

Why Composite Construction Beats Timber Frames

Traditional campers and caravans have relied on timber frames for decades. The problem? Timber absorbs moisture, expands and contracts with temperature changes, and eventually rots — especially in the harsh Australian climate where you’re dealing with coastal salt air one weekend and bone-dry inland heat the next.

Smidge uses lightweight composite construction across the entire range. Composite panels are bonded rather than bolted, creating a monocoque-style shell that’s stronger, lighter, and completely resistant to moisture ingress. There are no timber frames to swell, crack, or delaminate over time.

The result? A camper that weighs less, lasts longer, and doesn’t need the kind of ongoing structural maintenance that timber-framed alternatives demand. It’s the same construction philosophy used in marine vessels and aircraft — applied to a camper trailer that’s built to actually be used.

Towing

Lightweight Towing: Why Less Really Is More

There’s a growing trend in Australia toward smaller, lighter tow vehicles — from modern SUVs to hybrids and even fully electric cars. The problem is that most camper trailers haven’t kept up. They’re still heavy, high-drag boxes that demand a big V8 to get down the highway.

The Smidge Breeze weighs just 590 kg tare. That means it can be legally and comfortably towed by a huge range of vehicles — including hatchbacks, small SUVs, and electric vehicles. You don’t need to upgrade your car to start camping.

Lighter towing also means better fuel economy, less wear on your vehicle, easier reversing, and a more relaxed drive. The Anvil comes in at 850 kg — still well within range for most mid-size SUVs and 4WDs.

The days of needing a three-tonne tow vehicle are over. With Smidge, the camper fits around the car you already own.

Made in Australia

Finished in Australia. Built to Australian Standards.

Every Smidge is finished, fitted, and quality-checked right here in Australia — at the same Thornleigh facility that’s been building Suncamper Motorhomes for over 45 years. That means local warranty support, local parts supply, and a team that actually knows the product inside and out.

For the Long Weekend motorhome range, the bulk of the body construction is completed by quality manufacturing partners overseas, then shipped to Australia where it’s mounted on an Australian-delivered chassis and fitted out to meet Australian Design Rules and compliance standards. It’s how Smidge keeps the price accessible without cutting corners on the bits that matter.

The camper trailers — Breeze and Anvil — are fully constructed on site. Every weld, every bond, every electrical connection is done by the Smidge team in Thornleigh, NSW.

The result is a range that carries genuine Australian manufacturing pedigree, backed by 45 years of knowing what works and what doesn’t in this country.
